Chive Ceramics artisan shaping a ceramic wall flower by hand — designed in Toronto since 2004.

Two decades is a long time to do one thing. We have opinions about it.

Chive Studio was started in Toronto in 2004 by Todd Newgren, after enough years running other people's retail stores to know exactly what was missing from them: design that was original, made by hand, and impossible to find anywhere else. The original idea was to make handmade ceramic wall flowers that were beautiful and did not look like everything else. This turned out to be a reasonable idea. The studio grew steadily, expanded its range carefully, and at some point ended up in museum shops on two continents, which was not the original plan but which everyone involved found satisfying.

Exhibiting at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show since 2013; twice awarded the 5-star booth award — only two are given each year. Awarded a 4-star booth award at the 2026 show. We did not know the rating went above four stars until we received five. The O List, Vogue, GQ and Real Homes followed. Exhibiting at Maison & Objet Paris since 2024. Exhibited at Ambiente Frankfurt, 2026.

Chive has never sold to big-box retailers. This is a choice that has cost revenue and preserved the ability to make things at the standard the studio cares about. The flowers in the Kunsthal Rotterdam shop are the same flowers available on chiveceramics.com. The standard is not adjusted by the size of the order.

How a ceramic flower gets made.

Each flower is shaped by hand in stoneware clay: petals rolled, cut and attached one at a time, then dried, fired, glazed and fired again. No two are exactly alike, which is why a wall of them reads as a garden rather than a pattern. Sizes run from 7.5 cm to 15 cm. Each finished flower has a keyhole mount on the back and hangs on a single standard screw in about 90 seconds — no adhesive, no velcro. It then goes into its own fitted box, which is where the phrase pretty flowers in pretty boxes came from, and ships to EU customers from Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Frequently asked questions about Chive Ceramics

What does Chive Ceramics make?

Chive Ceramics makes handmade ceramic wall flowers and ceramic vases. Every flower is designed in Toronto and made by hand in stoneware, hangs on a wall with a single screw, and ships to EU customers from Rotterdam in its own fitted box. The vase range is the Pooley series and the Utopia designer vase. Chive has been making these things since 2004.

Where is Chive Ceramics based?

Chive Ceramics is the European store of Chive Studio, which was founded in Toronto, Canada, in 2004 and still designs everything there. Chive Ceramics is incorporated in the Netherlands, and EU orders ship from Rotterdam. Sister stores serve the United Kingdom (chiveuk.com), the United States (chive.com) and Canada (chive.ca).

Who founded Chive?

Todd Newgren founded Chive in Toronto in 2004 after years running retail stores and finding nothing in them he wanted to sell. He still leads design at the studio and reviews every page on this site. Chive has stayed small and independent, and has never sold to big-box retailers.

Who stocks Chive in Europe?

Chive is stocked at the Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, the Kunsthal Rotterdam, Singer Laren, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs boutique, the Danish Architecture Center and a growing list of European galleries, museum shops and design stores, all on our European stockists page. Worldwide, the flowers are in 200+ art galleries and botanical gardens. Retailers can open a trade account on our trade page.

What is the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 5-star booth award?

The RHS Chelsea Flower Show 5-star booth award is the highest rating the Royal Horticultural Society gives to trade exhibitors at Chelsea. Chive has been exhibiting since 2013 and has received it twice — only two are given each year — and was awarded a 4-star booth award at the 2026 show. The rating covers the overall standard of the booth, the display and the products shown. We did not know the rating went above four stars until we received five.

How do the flowers hang on the wall?

Each flower has a keyhole mount on the back and hangs on a single standard screw: drive the screw, slide the flower over it, done. No adhesive strips, no velcro, no hardware to buy. It takes about 90 seconds, and the screw does not require emotional support. Our blog has a full guide to spacing and grouping a wall of flowers.

Is Chive Ceramics the same company as Chive Studio?

Yes. Chive Studio is the Toronto design studio; Chive Ceramics is its European store and legal entity in the Netherlands. Same designs, same glazes, same people. The four stores exist so that customers in each region hold local stock and never pay cross-border duties.

Does Chive exhibit at trade fairs in Europe?

Yes. Exhibiting at Maison & Objet Paris since 2024, and exhibited at Ambiente Frankfurt in 2026, alongside the RHS Chelsea Flower Show since 2013. Retail buyers can find dates and book a stand appointment through our trade page.
